People Power Party Foreign Affairs and Security Special Committee: "Whoever Wins the US Presidential Election Will Have a Major Impact on Our Country"
'Emergency Meeting on the US Presidential Election and the Outlook for Korea-US Relations' Held
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] The People Power Party's Special Committee on Foreign Affairs and Security held an "Emergency Briefing on the U.S. Presidential Election and the Outlook for Korea-U.S. Relations" on the 23rd. This emergency briefing was organized to analyze the potential impact of the upcoming U.S. presidential election in November on future Korea-U.S. relations and to explore response measures.
Joo Ho-young, the floor leader of the People Power Party, stated at the briefing held at the National Assembly that morning, "Regardless of who wins, the outcome of the U.S. presidential election will have a significant impact not only on our country's foreign affairs and security but also on the global international situation." He added, "The Republic of Korea must develop the traditional alliance with the U.S. amid a harsh international order and security environment, while making meticulous and strategic preparations to protect national interests."
Park Jin, a member of the People Power Party and chair of the special committee, pointed out, "The trade war and technological hegemony competition between the U.S. and China are intensifying. Korea's position between the U.S. and China is becoming increasingly narrow." He continued, "The U.S.-Japan alliance, which responds to China's rise and challenges, is strengthening. However, regrettably, trust in Korea-U.S. relations is being shaken due to discord over North Korea policy."
Park emphasized, "As the Republic of Korea, which bases its diplomacy on the Korea-U.S. alliance, it is time to make a clear choice to protect the national interests of the free democratic values we aspire to and the peace and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula." He added, "We must thoroughly analyze the foreign and Korean Peninsula policies of candidates Trump and Biden and prepare a cool-headed and wise diplomatic policy that Korea should choose."

Former Foreign Minister Han Seung-joo stated, "We need to devise ways to adapt to the new security environment." He added, "However, there is no strategy agreed upon between progressives and conservatives. There is also no consensus on Korea-U.S. relations. Such weaknesses will be a great burden for Korea."
