Samsung 1st · LG 3rd... 'K-Battery' Leads Global Technology Patents
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Soyeon] Samsung and LG have been identified as global leaders in the field of battery technology patents.
According to a joint study by the European Patent Office (EPO) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) on the 22nd, from 2000 to 2018, Samsung filed a total of 4,787 patents in the battery technology sector, ranking first worldwide.
Japanese company Panasonic filed 4,046 patents, ranking second, and LG ranked third with a total of 2,999 patents.
By country, South Korea accounted for 17.4% of all battery technology patents from 2000 to 2018, ranking second after Japan.

Antonio Campinos, President of the EPO, said, "Energy storage technology is important for electric vehicles and the transition to renewable energy to address climate change," adding, "Asia is showing strength in this strategic industry sector in the field of patent data."
