View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangdong-gu (District Mayor) is expanding the operation of the AI recycling unmanned collection machine ‘Nephron’ to increase the recycling collection rate and promote resource circulation.
The district installed Nephron No. 3 in front of the Amsa-dong Relics Management Office in Seoul and began operation this month.
Nephron is a vending machine-type resource circulation robot applying artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technology. When cans or PET bottles are inserted into the input slot, AI sensors automatically sort, compress, and collect them, and points are credited to the user’s mobile phone according to the number collected.
Cans earn 7 won each, PET bottles 5 won each, and up to 30 items can be deposited per day. When 2,000 points are accumulated, they can be transferred to a personal account on the Superbin website and used like cash.
Gangdong-gu started a pilot operation of Nephron No. 1 at Seongil Elementary School in Seongnae-dong in July last year, and installed and operated No. 2 at Saemteo Neighborhood Park in Godeok-dong in September of the same year.
By August this year, each Nephron collected over 100,000 cans and PET bottles, encouraging voluntary participation from residents.

Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, “We expect Nephron No. 3 to receive great response from students and residents visiting the relics once the Prehistoric Relics Museum reopens as the COVID-19 situation eases,” adding, “We hope people recognize the importance of resource circulation through Nephron and achieve the dual benefits of environmental protection through recycling and cash rewards.”
