President Moon Jae-in is speaking at a meeting with Korean Buddhist leaders held at the Blue House on the morning of the 18th.
President Moon Jae-in marked the 2nd anniversary of the September 19 Pyongyang Joint Declaration by stating, "The September 19 inter-Korean agreement must be fully implemented."
On this day, President Moon posted on SNS (social networking service), emphasizing, "Although progress has stalled, our will for peace remains steadfast."
He expressed, "As we mark the 2nd anniversary of the September 19 Pyongyang Joint Declaration, I am filled with hopes that the clock of inter-Korean relations will start moving again."
Reflecting on the past, President Moon said, "Looking back in time, I was the first South Korean president to deliver a speech in front of our northern compatriots after the division, and together with Chairman Kim Jong-un, we declared a denuclearized and peaceful Korean Peninsula."
He continued, "We reached concrete and practical agreements in the military sector, which led to the demilitarization of Panmunjom and the excavation of remains at Hwaseol Hill, and since then, there has not been a single armed conflict between the two Koreas."
President Moon described this as "a very precious advancement," adding, "These achievements would have been impossible without the hopes of the people yearning for peace and the support of the international community."
He added, "Although the excitement was vivid, the clock has stopped," explaining, "The agreement was not implemented swiftly because it could not overcome internal and external constraints."
