Chinese Foreign Ministry: "The September 19 Joint Statement Holds Significance Amid Changes in the Korean Peninsula Situation"
15th Anniversary of the Six-Party Talks 9·19 Joint Statement
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] On the 18th, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on the 15th anniversary of the September 19 Joint Statement of the Six-Party Talks that "although the situation on the Korean Peninsula has changed significantly, the significance of the Joint Statement remains unchanged."
According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 18th, spokesperson Wang Wenbin made this claim during a regular briefing when asked to comment on the 15th anniversary of the September 19 Joint Statement.
Spokesperson Wang emphasized, "The September 19 Joint Statement achieved a significant outcome in that the countries agreed to resolve the Korean Peninsula issue politically," adding, "It holds milestone-like significance regarding the Korean Peninsula issue."
Wang stated, "Although there have been major changes in the recent situation on the Korean Peninsula, the principles established by the September 19 Joint Statement?that the goals of each item and the concerns of each country should be addressed equally and simultaneously?still hold important significance today," and stressed, "In the current situation, we need to once again take the spirit of the September 19 Joint Statement as a mirror."

He continued, "According to the principle of resolving issues step-by-step and simultaneously, the political resolution process of the Korean Peninsula issue must be continuously promoted," and added, "China hopes that all countries will work together based on the idea of Ssang-gwe Byeonghaeng (雙軌竝行; the parallel tracks of the Korean Peninsula denuclearization process and the North Korea-US peace agreement negotiations) to achieve lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula and in the Northeast Asia region."
