Gurye County Council Urges Compensation for Flood Control Failure Damage at Seomjin River and Juam Dam
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yuk Miseok] On the 16th, the Gurye County Council in Jeollanam-do announced that at the 274th extraordinary session held on the 14th, a joint statement titled "Statement Urging Damage Countermeasures and Compensation Due to the Failure of Flood Control Functions of the Seomjin River Dam and Juam Dam" was issued, co-sponsored by Councilor Jeong Jeongseop and six others.
Councilor Jeong Jeongseop stated in the statement, "The flooding in the upper and lower regions of the Seomjin River caused by the heavy rains in early August was not a natural disaster (天災) but a man-made disaster (人災) due to the mismanagement by Korea Water Resources Corporation, which manages the sluice gates of the Seomjin River Dam and Juam Dam." He added, "We urge a thorough investigation into the causes and responsibilities of this flood disaster, acknowledgment of responsibility for the failure to control discharge volumes, compensation for damages, and the establishment of permanent measures to prevent recurrence."
The "Statement Urging Damage Countermeasures and Compensation Due to the Failure of Flood Control Functions of the Seomjin River Dam and Juam Dam" includes key points such as ▲requesting Korea Water Resources Corporation to acknowledge responsibility and compensate for damages ▲requesting the Ministry of Environment to investigate the causes and responsibilities of the flood and establish recurrence prevention measures ▲requesting the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs to prepare standards for estimating restoration costs, all necessary for overcoming the flood damage in Gurye County.
