'Palmido Lighthouse' Leading the Success of the Incheon Landing Operation Designated as Historic Site
"Contributing to a Sudden Shift in the War Phase"
The 'Incheon Palmido Lighthouse,' the oldest existing modern-style lighthouse in Korea, has been designated as a historic site. The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on the 15th that this structure, built in 1903, has been designated as Historic Site No. 557. The designation includes one lighthouse building, one stone wall, and a protected area of 966.2㎡. It became famous for guiding the Allied naval fleet into Incheon during the Incheon Landing Operation. It was evaluated to have historical as well as symbolic value for contributing to a sudden turning point in the war. An official stated, "It is even more meaningful as it was designated on the 70th anniversary of the Incheon Landing Operation (September 15)."
