Afghan-Taliban Peace Talks Begin... Ministry of Foreign Affairs "Expect to Lay Foundation for Peace and Prosperity"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The government has expressed its welcome regarding the commencement of peace negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban.
On the 14th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a spokesperson's comment, "Our government welcomes the start of internal talks on the 12th in Doha, Qatar, between the Afghan government and the Taliban to discuss a permanent ceasefire and Afghanistan's future political roadmap."
It added, "Our government hopes that substantial outcomes will be achieved in these negotiations, laying the foundation for building peace and prosperity in Afghanistan and the region," and emphasized, "We will continue to participate in the international community's efforts to establish stability and peace in Afghanistan."
The Afghan government and the Taliban began peace talks on the 12th in Doha, Qatar. These negotiations were initiated to end the civil war that has lasted since 2001 and to establish regional peace. Representatives from both sides, as well as U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who acted as a mediator, attended the talks.

However, there are expectations that the negotiation process will not be easy. There are significant differences in opinions on key issues such as the timing of the ceasefire, the political system, and the scope of individual freedoms. For compromise to be reached, concessions from one side are necessary, but sensitive agendas make finding common ground difficult. Therefore, it is anticipated that it may take years for the peace negotiations to result in explicitly agreed-upon terms by both parties.
