Yoo Myung-hee Departs for the U.S. on the 15th... Discussions on WTO Director-General Election and Current Issues

View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] Yoo Myung-hee, the Director-General for Trade at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, who is running for the position of Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), is visiting the United States.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 14th, Director-General Yoo will depart for Washington D.C. on the 15th and stay until the 18th, during which she plans to hold consultations with the U.S. government, industry, and experts regarding the election of the next WTO Director-General.
This visit to the U.S. aims to discuss major WTO issues and various matters between Korea and the U.S., considering that the first round of the WTO Director-General election will conclude on the 16th.
The first round, which began on the 7th of this month, will end on the 16th, during which three of the eight candidates will be eliminated. The results of the first round will be announced during the week of the 21st.
Prior to this, candidate Yoo conducted election activities in Geneva, Switzerland, and Paris, France, from the 1st of this month until recently.

If Director-General Yoo passes the first round, she will enter the second round of campaigning. The schedule for the second round will be announced later by the WTO General Council Chair after consultations among member countries. In the second round, three more candidates will be eliminated, and the final two candidates will compete in the last stage.
