View original imageThe theaters remained barren even last weekend. According to the Korea Film Council's integrated box office data for movie tickets, the number of moviegoers who visited theaters last weekend (11th-13th) was 339,296. This is 45,139 fewer than the 384,435 visitors during the first weekend of this month (4th-6th). Even on Saturday (12th), the day when the most viewers usually gather, the number did not exceed 150,000. The resurgence of COVID-19 has put a brake on box office success. With multiple release delays, the choices available to audiences were also limited.
'Tenet' led the weekend box office for three consecutive weeks but failed to surpass a cumulative audience of 1.5 million. Last weekend, it attracted only 163,631 viewers across 1,314 screens (11,227 showings). This is a 27.1% (60,885) decrease compared to the 224,516 viewers during the first weekend of this month. The seat occupancy rate, which once reached 69.5%, dropped to 35.1%, and the sales rate fell to 8.2%. The revenue share was 50.3%, with a cumulative audience of 1,333,803.
'Oh! Moon-hee' maintained second place but failed to gain momentum. It drew 49,470 viewers on 724 screens (6,435 showings). This is a 47.5% (44,678) decrease compared to the 94,148 viewers during the first weekend of this month. The seat sales rate was only 5.3%. The revenue share was 13.9%, with a cumulative audience of 227,215. The new release 'The New Mutants' attracted 34,728 viewers on 803 screens (7,280 showings). Although it secured the second-largest number of seats (1,202,899), its sales rate was only 2.9%. The cumulative audience was 48,987.
