UK's GDP Grows 6.6% in July Following Easing of COVID Lockdown Measures
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] The United Kingdom's economic growth rate has expanded for three consecutive months following the easing of COVID-19 lockdown measures.
On the 11th (local time), the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) announced that the gross domestic product (GDP) in July increased by 6.6% compared to the previous month.
The UK's monthly GDP growth rate recorded significant declines in March and April due to the impact of COVID-19. It then turned positive in May with a 2.4% increase, followed by sustained growth in June (8.7%) and July (6.6%).
In July, the service sector grew by 6.1%, manufacturing by 6.3%, and production by 5.2% respectively.
The substantial growth rate in July is attributed to the fact that from this time, pubs, restaurants, and hotels began reopening, effectively easing most lockdown restrictions.
