Court Sentences Girlfriend to 30 Years in Prison Again in 'Bucheon Ringer Murder Case'
"No Evidence of Joint Suicide Attempt"
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seok-jin] A former nursing assistant who was charged with killing her boyfriend by administering a lethal dose of drugs was sentenced to a heavy prison term again in the appellate court.
The Seoul High Court Criminal Division 6 (Presiding Judges Oh Seok-jun, Lee Jeong-hwan, Jeong Su-jin) dismissed the appeal of former nursing assistant B (32), who was arrested and indicted on charges of killing her boyfriend A (30 at the time of death), and sentenced her to 30 years in prison, the same as the first trial.
B denied the murder charge, claiming that in the second trial she only intended to make an extreme joint suicide attempt with A, not to kill him, but this was not accepted.
The court pointed out, "The defendant's murder caused serious harm not only to the victim but also to the victim's family, yet the defendant shows no remorse, claiming that they decided on joint suicide with the victim and attempted death, but only the defendant survived."
Also, B's claim that A requested her to kill him was rejected, stating, "There is no objective evidence other than the defendant's statement that the victim expressed a desire to die."
B was arrested and indicted on charges of killing A by administering a lethal dose of anesthetic propofol and anti-inflammatory analgesic diclofenac via IV drip at a motel in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, in October 2018.
At the time of the incident, B was also at the motel with A, and test results showed that she had taken drugs as well, but at a level that was treatable.
