Jeonnam Province Implements 'Livestock Vehicle Access Control' at AI Prevention Migratory Bird Habitats
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province has judged that the risk of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) occurring in winter is high, and has strengthened preemptive measures such as restricting livestock vehicle access to migratory bird habitats to block the spread.
According to Jeonnam Province on the 10th, the occurrence of highly pathogenic AI overseas has surged 2.8 times compared to last year, making the possibility of domestic inflow due to migratory birds this winter very high.
First, Jeollanam-do designated livestock vehicle control zones in migratory bird habitats within the province and has begun full-scale operation to prevent AI.
The livestock vehicle restricted areas include 31 sections across 8 cities and counties in the province, categorized as high, medium, and low-risk migratory bird habitats. These include ▲areas where AI was previously detected ▲locations with many migratory birds ▲roads within 500m of many poultry farms.
Accordingly, if livestock vehicles pass through these areas, GPS terminal broadcasts will immediately guide them to detour.
Jeonnam Province also plans to fully implement strengthened preemptive quarantine measures.
▲Operation of ASF, AI, and foot-and-mouth disease quarantine situation rooms from this month (maintaining a 24-hour emergency system) ▲Restriction of livestock vehicle access to migratory bird habitats ▲Conducting tests to confirm whether migratory bird habitats are highly pathogenic.
Additionally, ▲special inspections of vulnerable farms and livestock facilities ▲creation of a quicklime quarantine belt around migratory bird habitats ▲twice-monthly closures and cleaning/disinfection of poultry sales shops in traditional markets and poultry distribution merchants’ holding areas ▲preparation of specialized personnel for culling will be carried out as preemptive quarantine measures.

Lee Yongbo, head of the Animal Quarantine Division of Jeonnam Province, said, “Since the possibility of domestic inflow of avian influenza is high this winter, livestock vehicles must detour roads adjacent to migratory bird habitats,” and added, “Poultry farms should thoroughly pre-inspect quarantine facilities and continue to implement blocking quarantine such as disinfection and access control.”
