Expansion of 527 Public Wi-Fi Locations with Self-Communication Network (City Budget 3.3 Billion KRW) Built by October... Bridging the Digital Divide and Ensuring Basic Communication Rights Through Public Wi-Fi Installation
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Kim Mi-kyung, Mayor of Eunpyeong District, signed a business agreement with Seoul City at 2:20 PM on the 9th on the 8th floor of Seoul City Hall to establish the Smart Seoul Network (S-Net).
At the event, Seo Jeong-hyeop, Acting Mayor of Seoul, and the mayors of the five first-selected autonomous districts?Kim Mi-kyung of Eunpyeong District, Noh Hyun-song of Gangseo District, Jung Won-oh of Seongdong District, Lee Dong-jin of Dobong District, and Lee Sung of Guro District?participated together.
According to the agreement, Eunpyeong District and Seoul City will mutually cooperate to guarantee residents' basic communication rights and establish an integrated wired and wireless communication network as a foundation for non-face-to-face smart city services.
The district plans to expand its private communication network by 24 km and maintain the existing private network of 107 km by October, installing 527 public Wi-Fi units. These will apply Wi-Fi 6, a newer technology that is faster and safer than existing public Wi-Fi.
Kim Mi-kyung, Mayor of Eunpyeong District, stated, "By expanding the private communication network and increasing public Wi-Fi installations, we can bridge the communication gap between regions and social classes, guarantee basic communication rights, and reduce communication costs. We will create a smart city Eunpyeong for socially vulnerable groups so that residents can freely use public services anytime and anywhere."
Following the agreement ceremony, the Seoul public Wi-Fi Kkachion BI (Brand Identity) launch ceremony was held. Kkachion means that the Wi-Fi named ‘Kkachi’ (magpie), representing Seoul, is turned On; the magpie brings good news of strong Wi-Fi connectivity; and it symbolizes warm Wi-Fi enveloping Seoul, with ‘Kkachion (溫)’ meaning warmth.
