Seongbuk-gu Child and Youth Participatory Budget Project Applications Received
Final Project Confirmed Through Youth Direct Proposals and Discussions, Reflecting Actual Demand in 2021 Child and Adolescent Programs, Included in Seongbuk-gu Budget
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) will accept applications for the 2021 Seongbuk-gu Child and Youth Participatory Budgeting Project for two weeks from the 7th to the 18th.
Seongbuk-gu, the first city in Korea to be certified as a UNICEF Child-Friendly City, has been implementing child and youth participatory budgeting since 2014 to guarantee the participation rights of youth.
The child and youth participatory budgeting reviews feasible projects directly proposed by youth, discusses them in youth forums, and selects the final projects through voting to reflect them in the actual budget. In 2019, 30 projects were proposed by youth, and after youth forums, six projects worth about 100 million won were included in the budget.
This year as well, a 100 million won youth proposal contest will be held to select and operate the Seongbuk-gu Child and Youth Participatory Budgeting Project to reflect and implement youth ideas in actual Seongbuk-gu projects.
Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, said, “The youth participatory budgeting system, which reflects the opinions of youth in reality, is the true realization of democracy and a process in which youth participation rights are practically guaranteed. This year, many youths’ interest and participation are needed to discover policies that are truly necessary for Seongbuk-gu youth.”

Meanwhile, the youth participatory budgeting project invites proposals for projects or programs that actively utilize youth ideas from youth residing, attending school, or using facilities in Seongbuk-gu. Applications can be submitted by filling out the form on the Seongbuk-gu Office website and sending it via email (man6669@sb.go.kr) or by mail (Seongbuk-gu Bomun-ro 168, Seongbuk-gu Office Education Support Division).
