Honam University Provides 'AI Scholarship' to All Freshmen of the 2021 Academic Year
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Honam University (President Park Sangcheol) has shown a strong commitment to fostering AI convergence talents who will lead the 4th Industrial Revolution era.
On the 6th, Honam University announced that it will provide AI (Artificial Intelligence) Talent Scholarships, which include essential smart devices for AI education, to all freshmen of the 2021 academic year.
The provision of the AI Talent Scholarship is a groundbreaking support measure following an 11% tuition reduction for the second semester this year, despite ongoing tuition freezes and reductions over several years and increasing financial difficulties due to COVID-19. It is expected to greatly help reduce the financial burden on freshmen and their parents.
Honam University decided to provide freshmen who register after initial acceptance in the early admission process with vouchers or cash worth approximately 550,000 KRW to purchase various smart devices, including smartphones and tablet PCs, as part of the AI Talent Scholarship.
Additionally, those who register after being admitted through the early admission waitlist will receive smart devices such as AirPods worth about 200,000 KRW or cash. The AI Talent Scholarship is provided regardless of academic merit scholarships, so the benefits are significantly expanded for high-achieving students.
However, the scholarship will not be provided to students who withdraw before April 1, 2021, or take a leave of absence due to military enlistment or other reasons.
Son Hongmin, Director of Admissions, stated, “We have implemented the AI Talent Scholarship to provide smart devices so that freshmen can actively utilize the cutting-edge educational services of the newly established AI convergence campus, including facial recognition automatic attendance systems, online video classes and learning, various edutech-based extracurricular activities, course registration, real-time location tracking of shuttle buses, and WiFi 6 (5G network).” He added, “Freshmen will be able to grow into talents who will lead the 4th Industrial Revolution at Honam University, which nurtures all students as AI convergence talents.”
Meanwhile, Honam University will select all 1,651 students in the 2021 academic year early admission from the 23rd to the 28th.
The 2021 early admission “General Student Track” reflects 60% of the student record and 40% of the interview.
The Department of Nursing and the Department of Physical Therapy select five times the number of applicants based on 100% student records in the first stage, followed by interviews. Other general departments conduct interviews for all applicants. The biggest feature of the “General Student Track” is that there is no minimum CSAT (College Scholastic Ability Test) grade requirement.
The 2021 early admission interviews will be conducted non-face-to-face (online) to prevent infectious diseases among examinees due to the spread of COVID-19. The non-face-to-face interview allows examinees to answer interviewers’ questions via webcam-equipped computers or smartphones (mobile applications) in a safe space without time or location constraints.
