40-Year History Art Exhibition, This Theme Reminds Us of ‘Busan’
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The '2020 Busan Biennale,' with a 40-year history, opens for a 65-day schedule from the 5th to November 8th.
Busan City and the Busan Biennale Organizing Committee announced on the 4th that the event will be jointly held at the Busan Museum of Modern Art, the original downtown area, and Yeongdo district.
The Busan Biennale began in 1981 as the nation's first event under the name 'Busan Youth Biennale,' gathering the intentions of local artists.
This year, Danish exhibition curator Jakob Fabricius is serving as the exhibition director.
Under the theme "Words at an Exhibition?an exhibition in ten chapters and five poems," 89 novelists, poets, visual artists, and sound artists from 34 countries participated. A total of 233 works were submitted.
This exhibition goes beyond the traditional visual arts focus to blend literature, art, and music. It is a unique art exhibition to read, see, and listen to, where novelists and poets write about 'Busan,' and artists realize these writings into artworks. Visitors encounter the memories and history of the city of 'Busan' through a new exhibition genre.
Due to the implementation of social distancing level 2 amid the spread of COVID-19, the opening ceremony will be held online via live streaming on YouTube at 4 p.m. on September 5th.
The first part includes greetings from the executive chairman and exhibition director, performance shows, and artist interviews, while the second part is an online tour where the exhibition director explains the exhibition hall and artworks.
The Busan Biennale Organizing Committee plans to open the exhibition hall with restrictions according to the phased measures of COVID-19 social distancing.
Byun Sung-wan, Acting Mayor of Busan, said, "The 2020 Busan Biennale, held amid the COVID-19 pandemic, will become a new exhibition model preparing for the post-COVID era," adding, "I hope this exhibition brings comfort to citizens weary from COVID-19, typhoons, and heavy rains."
