[2020 Women's Lives] 6.487 Million Female-Headed Households... Up 5.8%P from 10 Years Ago
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] Among all households in South Korea, 30% are female-headed households, and single-person households are rapidly increasing.
According to the "2020 Statistics on Women's Lives" report released on the 2nd by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and Statistics Korea, the number of female-headed households this year was 6,487,000, accounting for 31.9% of the total.
Compared to 10 years ago (26.1%), this is an increase of 5.8 percentage points. The government forecasts that this upward trend will continue in 2030 (35.4%) and 2040 (37.8%).
Among female household heads, widowed women accounted for the largest share at 29.9%, followed by married women living apart at 26.8%, unmarried women at 24.0%, and divorced women at 19.3%.
Single-person households are also continuously increasing. This year, single-person households numbered 3,094,000, making up 30.2% of all households (20,343,000 households).
Among these, female single-person households numbered 3,094,000, accounting for 50.3% of all single-person households in South Korea. This represents an increase of 152,000 households (5.1%) compared to the previous year, and an increase of 876,000 households (39.5%) compared to 10 years ago.

The highest proportion of female single-person households was among those aged 70 and over (28.0%), followed by those in their 60s (17.3%) and those in their 20s (17.2%).
