Rain Across All Areas of Jeju Starting Tonight, Under Typhoon 'Maysak' Influence
Expected to Approach Closest to Jeju Island on the Night of the 2nd
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Chang-won] As Typhoon No. 9 'Maysak (MAYSAK)' moves northward, a typhoon advisory has been issued for Jeju Island. The typhoon is expected to be closest to Jeju Island on the night of the 2nd.
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) announced a typhoon advisory for Jeju Island and its surrounding waters starting from the morning of the 2nd, following the issuance of the advisory for the distant southern sea of Jeju Island late at night on the 1st.
The KMA forecasted that as the typhoon moves northward, raincloud bands formed at the front will flow in along the air currents, causing rain mainly in mountainous areas and the southern and eastern regions affected by the terrain until 3 PM. Subsequently, rain is expected to expand to the entire Jeju Island from late afternoon (3 to 6 PM).
The KMA stated, "Strong raincloud bands accompanied by thunder and lightning at the front of the typhoon in the southeastern sea are moving northwest-west at a speed of 30 km/h and are entering Jeju Island," adding, "It is expected to affect the southern and eastern areas (Seogwipo City, Seongsan-eup, Namwon-eup, Daejeong-eup, etc.)."
As of 3 AM on the 1st, Typhoon Maysak, moving north-northwest about 160 km southwest of Okinawa, Japan, is a very strong typhoon with a central pressure of 940 hPa and maximum wind speeds of 47 m/s. The typhoon is expected to maintain its very strong intensity and approach the sea about 450 km south of Seogwipo around 3 AM on the 2nd.
It is then expected to pass through the eastern sea of Jeju Island in the evening (6 to 9 PM) on the 2nd, pass near the coast of Gyeongsang Province at dawn, and move into the East Sea in the morning.
The KMA expects 100 to 300 mm of rain to fall on Jeju from the 1st to the morning of the 3rd due to the raincloud bands accompanying the typhoon, with particularly heavy rainfall exceeding 400 mm expected mainly in the mountainous areas of Jeju. Additionally, winds will gradually strengthen from the night of the 1st, with very strong winds reaching maximum instantaneous speeds of 30 to 50 m/s forecast from the 2nd to the early morning of the 3rd.
