Discovery of Endangered Wildlife Class II 'Jineballan' Colony
More than 200 Specimens Confirmed in 200㎡ Area of Dadohae Marine Island Region
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The endangered wild species level II, Sarcanthus scolopendrifolius Makino, was discovered in the Dadohae marine island area.
The Dadohaehaesang National Park Western Office (Director Lee Cheon-gyu) announced on the 1st that a large colony of Sarcanthus scolopendrifolius was found during a survey of endangered and native plants using drones.
Sarcanthus scolopendrifolius is an endangered wild plant species level II designated by the Ministry of Environment, native only to Jeju Island and some areas of Jeollanam-do. It is especially valuable because it grows attached to old trees or rocks, making it difficult to find.
The discovered colony of Sarcanthus scolopendrifolius covers approximately 200㎡, with over 200 individuals confirmed to be growing in a large group.
Oh Chang-young, head of the Marine Resources Division at the Dadohaehaesang National Park Western Office, said, “The discovery of this Sarcanthus scolopendrifolius colony can be seen as evidence that biodiversity within the park is being preserved. We will continue efforts to restore habitats and conserve endangered wild species (such as Cymbidium goeringii) using advanced technologies like drones.”
