[Asia Economy Reporter Yoonju Hwang] Hyosung TNC is expanding its global eco-friendly fiber market presence by supplying eco-friendly fiber materials to OSPREY, the world's number one outdoor backpack brand.
Hyosung TNC developed 'MIPAN®regen robic,' the world's first eco-friendly nylon high-tenacity yarn brand, made by recycling by-products generated during the fiber production process. It is lightweight and has excellent tear strength (resistance to fabric tearing) and abrasion resistance, making it suitable for outdoor products such as backpacks, workwear, and swimwear. Recycled nylon fiber reduces greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 6-7 kg of CO2 for every 1 kg produced, making it a representative eco-friendly fiber.
Since the first quarter, Hyosung TNC has started supplying MIPAN®regen robic, a high-tenacity recycled nylon fiber, to the US-based OSPREY. OSPREY plans to introduce the flagship backpack line 'Talon/Tempest Series' featuring MIPAN®regen robic to consumers in the spring season next year.
In February last year, at ISPO (Global Sports Goods & Outdoor Exhibition), one of the world's top three outdoor exhibitions held in Munich, Germany, OSPREY directly requested Hyosung TNC to "produce eco-friendly yet high-strength products." Having supplied the general fiber version of MIPAN®regen robic, called 'robic,' to OSPREY for several years and gaining recognition for its technology and supply capacity, Hyosung TNC launched the customized eco-friendly nylon yarn MIPAN®regen robic after more than a year of development.
Meanwhile, demand for 'eco-friendly products' to enhance corporate value is increasing recently, especially in premium markets such as the Americas and Europe. The European Union (EU) plans to introduce the 'Carbon Border Adjustment' system from next year, which will impose carbon taxes on imports with high greenhouse gas emissions.
The global eco-friendly fiber market is growing at an average annual rate of about 10% and is expected to reach approximately $70 billion (about 83 trillion KRW) by 2025.1)
Following this trend, Hyosung TNC's eco-friendly fiber division sales have more than doubled annually since 2017. Hyosung TNC plans to strengthen its global market presence with eco-friendly fiber products such as MIPAN®regen (nylon), regen (polyester), and Creora regen (spandex).
Hyosung Chairman Cho Hyun-jun stated, "Customers already demand a high level of environmental awareness and responsibility from companies," adding, "Based on the Green Management Vision 2030, Hyosung will continuously expand products, materials, and business models that realize eco-friendly values."
