Vice Minister Choi Jong-geon Holds First Meeting with Harris, U.S. Ambassador to Korea: "Hope for Cooperation through the ROK-U.S. Alliance"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 31st at 2 p.m., Choi Jong-geon, First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with Harry Harris, U.S. Ambassador to Korea, for about 50 minutes, combining a courtesy call upon his appointment. They exchanged wide-ranging views on the Korea-U.S. relationship as well as regional and international affairs.
At the meeting, Vice Minister Choi evaluated the continuous close communication at all levels, including between the Korea-U.S. heads of state, despite the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis, and said, "I hope to continue cooperation between the two countries based on the strong Korea-U.S. alliance."
In response, Ambassador Harris congratulated Vice Minister Choi on his appointment and said that the two countries should continue to cooperate to expand Korea-U.S. cooperation. It is known that there were no discussions on current issues such as the Korea-U.S. working group, North Korea denuclearization talks, or changes in the role of the United Nations Command.
Furthermore, Vice Minister Choi and Ambassador Harris agreed to maintain close communication frequently not only on Korea-U.S. relations but also on various mutual interests at the regional and global levels.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Harris expressed condolences for the four Korean nationals who tragically died in the collision accident involving a U.S. military armored vehicle and a civilian vehicle that occurred in Pocheon. After the meeting with Vice Minister Choi, he wrote on Twitter, "Had a great meeting and discussed all topics related to the Korea-U.S. alliance. Congratulations on your new position."
