Gwangju City Conducts Pilot Operation of Six Eco-Friendly 3-Door Low-Floor Buses
From September 1, Jinwol07, Munheung18... Suwan03 from the 7th
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 31st that it will pilot operate six 'eco-friendly 3-door low-floor buses' with three doors starting from the 1st of next month.
Operation will begin first on routes Jinwol07 and Munheung18, and route Suwan03 will start running from the 7th of next month after road maintenance in the Hyochon 1 District is completed.
On route Suwan03, three low-floor buses operate 19 times a day covering the areas 'Cheomdan~Suwan District~Chonnam National University~Chosun University~Gwangju University~Jinwol District~Hyochon District,' while on route Jinwol07, two buses operate 18 times a day passing through 'Songam Industrial Complex~Gwangju University~Chungjang Security Center~Chonnam National University~Ochi KEPCO~Ilgok District,' among others.
Route Munheung18 has one bus running seven times a day covering 'Munheung District~Chonnam National University~Kyungshin Girls' High School~Unam-dong~Dongcheon District~Unam District~Wolgok District~Hanam 2 District~Jingok Industrial Complex.'
Bus operation times can be checked on the 'Gwangju Bus Operation Information System Bulletin Board.'
Passengers board using the first door near the driver's seat and disembark using the second and third doors. Wheelchairs and strollers can board and disembark through the second door.
The '3-door low-floor bus' has a low floor and is 12 meters long, about 1.1 meters longer than conventional buses. It features antibacterial and flame-retardant bus seats, a comfortable interior space considerate of passengers, safety features such as safety doors that prevent departure before the doors are fully closed, emergency exits, and facilities like USB ports for charging mobile phones.
Gwangju City is strengthening quarantine activities such as temperature checks for transportation workers before the first city bus operation, mandatory mask-wearing at all times, vehicle disinfection, and provision of hand sanitizers as social distancing was upgraded to quasi-level 3 due to the resurgence of COVID-19.

Son Doo-young, head of the city's Public Transportation Division, said, "Since the 3-door low-floor bus is longer than existing buses, it is expected to help reduce congestion inside the bus," and added, "Wearing a mask is the most effective preventive measure to block COVID-19 inside the bus, so we kindly ask passengers to wear masks when using city buses."
