Say "Participatory Map Making" instead of "Community Mapping"
'Aging Tech' Alternative Term Recommended as 'Senior-Customized Technology'
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of Korean Language recommended on the 31st that the term ‘community mapping’ be replaced with the Korean phrase ‘참여형 지도 제작’ (participatory map making). They also suggested the Korean alternatives ‘고령 맞춤 기술’ (aging-customized technology) and ‘고령층 정보화’ (digitalization of the elderly) to replace ‘aging tech’ and ‘digital aging,’ respectively.
‘Community mapping’ refers to the activity where members of society collect information related to a specific topic and mark it on a map or edit existing maps, collaboratively creating maps. The selection of the alternative term ‘참여형 지도 제작’ was based on survey results. In a public acceptance survey conducted on the 24th and 25th with about 600 participants, 95.8% of respondents answered that it was appropriate.
‘Aging tech’ refers to technologies developed for the elderly who may be excluded from electronic, information, and communication technologies. ‘Digital aging’ means aging while adapting to digital culture and digital environments and effectively utilizing information and communication technologies. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of Korean Language decided on the alternatives ‘고령 맞춤 기술’ and ‘고령층 정보화’ respectively at the Saemal Meeting held from the 21st to the 23rd.

The Saemal Meeting is a committee that provides Korean alternative terms easily understood by the general public before difficult foreign neologisms spread. Experts from various fields such as Korean language, foreign languages, education, publicity and publishing, information and communication, and media participate. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of Korean Language plan to continuously promote the use of these alternatives, led by government ministries and media outlets.
