[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Due to the recent rapid resurgence of COVID-19, the education authorities have restricted students, except for high school seniors in the metropolitan area, to remote classes only, raising concerns about declining academic achievement and widening learning gaps among students.
Seocho-gu (Mayor Cho Eun-hee) is proactively supporting the establishment of an educational safety net that links ‘AI Smart Schooling’ and ‘Seoripulsaem Mentoring,’ providing 1:1 customized learning even to generally vulnerable children to address the deepening academic gap.
In April, a demand survey was conducted targeting elementary school students among 897 children including low-income, education subsidy recipients, multicultural families, grandparent-headed households, and other general children through local welfare planners, expanding from the 258 vulnerable children initially served. Based on the survey results, about 600 elementary students facing learning difficulties due to the prolonged COVID-19 situation will receive expanded support starting September 1.
Additionally, the provision of AI Smart Schooling devices has been expanded from one device per household with two or fewer children and two devices for households with three or more children to one device per individual, thereby establishing a sufficient learning environment.
For 136 students who find online classes difficult, such as lower-grade elementary students, multicultural families, and grandparent-headed households, more meticulous special management is provided. Mentors offer intensive daily support for one week to enable self-directed learning, and if necessary, emergency volunteer teams are dispatched to assist with home learning from multiple angles.
Furthermore, through the ‘Seocho-gu Exclusive Smart Schooling Learning Management System,’ attendance rates, performance rates, accuracy rates, average study time, and learning status of all students using the system can be monitored on a weekly and monthly basis. Seoripulsaem (mentors) review detailed individual learning analysis data and organically connect online and offline support to maximize the synergy effect of 1:1 learning.
Meanwhile, the district is providing various forms of support to bridge educational gaps caused by COVID-19. About 70 vulnerable middle and high school students receive 1:1 personalized career and college entrance consulting.
In particular, high school seniors taking this year’s college entrance exams are offered free individual customized professional entrance consulting and online acceptance diagnosis services.
An online mentoring system using platforms such as YouTube has been established, and various content will be uploaded to prevent learning gaps caused by COVID-19.
