[Asia Economy Reporter Seo So-jung] The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCH) warned that if the current trend of the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) continues, the daily confirmed cases could approach 2,000 next week.
At a regular briefing on the 28th, Jeong Eun-kyung, head of the CDSCH, stated, "According to epidemic modeling experts' forecasts, if the current epidemic situation persists, the number of confirmed cases could increase to between 800 and 2,000 per day next week."
Jeong emphasized, "If the epidemic situation is not controlled immediately, the number of confirmed cases could increase exponentially, risking the collapse of the medical system," adding, "This is a crisis situation that could lead to paralysis of essential social functions or enormous economic damage."
She continued, "For the next ten days, please cancel all meetings except for essential outings such as commuting, hospital visits, or purchasing daily necessities, and stay at home as much as possible," and stressed, "Please switch religious activities and various meetings to non-face-to-face formats." According to the CDSCH, as of 0:00 on the 28th, 19 additional COVID-19 cases were confirmed at Sarang Jeil Church, bringing the total cumulative confirmed cases to 978, and the total cumulative confirmed cases related to 12 churches reached 1,460.
Jeong said, "Since the beginning of this month, confirmed cases have surged, with new confirmed cases approaching a total of 4,400," and urged, "As the rapid increase in confirmed cases is reaching the limits of epidemiological investigations, the cooperation of the public is desperately needed."
