President Moon Appoints Seo Wook, West Point Graduate and Army Chief of Staff, as Minister of National Defense (Update)
Jeong Kyeong-doo Nominated as Successor to Defense Minister, Seo Wook Appointed Chief of Staff... "High Understanding of Moon Jae-in Government's Security Philosophy and National Tasks"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] President Moon Jae-in has nominated Seo Wook, a graduate of the Korea Military Academy, and former Chief of Staff of the Army, as the successor to Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo.
Kang Min-seok, spokesperson for the Blue House, stated during a briefing at the Chuncheon Press Center on the afternoon of the 28th, "President Moon Jae-in has nominated Seo Wook, Chief of Staff of the Army, as the Minister of National Defense," adding, "He is scheduled to be appointed after a confirmation hearing in the National Assembly."
The new Defense Minister nominee, Seo Wook, was born in 1963 and is a graduate of Gwangju Inseong High School and the 41st class of the Korea Military Academy. He has served as Director of Operations at the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Commander of the 1st Corps, Commander of the 25th Infantry Division, Director of Operations at the ROK-US Combined Forces Command, and later as Chief of Staff of the Army.
Spokesperson Kang evaluated, "He has held key military command positions across the board and possesses high expertise in field and operational areas," adding, "He has a deep understanding of the Moon Jae-in administration's security philosophy and national agenda."
Spokesperson Kang also said, "With over 30 years of military service, he is expected to establish a firm military readiness based on broad insight," and expressed hope that "through policies such as the civilianization of defense, he will build a strong military trusted by the people."
A senior Blue House official explained regarding the appointment of a Defense Minister from the Korea Military Academy, "This is a selection of a capable person regardless of which branch of the military they come from," and added, "The message of this appointment is a firm military readiness and the transition of wartime operational control based on the ROK-US alliance." The official further explained, "Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo served a long term, made many efforts, and achieved results. This appointment is intended to revitalize the organization with a new atmosphere."

Regarding other figures who were considered for the Defense Minister position, the senior Blue House official refrained from elaborating, stating, "While I can explain the background of the appointment and the message behind it, it is difficult to explain the verification process."
