Lee Hae-chan: "The private sector will play a role in supporting peace on the Korean Peninsula and inter-Korean exchanges... Will not intervene in presidential or local elections"
[Asia Economy Reporter Wondara] Lee Hae-chan, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced that after completing his term, he will engage in activities to support inter-Korean exchange and cooperation in the private sector. Having declared his retirement from politics, he firmly stated that he will not intervene in local elections or the presidential election.
On the afternoon of the 28th, during a farewell press conference held through the Democratic Party's YouTube channel 'Sseum TV,' Lee said, "Tomorrow marks the end of my 32 years in political life," adding, "I will make various efforts for peace on the Korean Peninsula going forward."
He stated, "I am serving as the chairman of the Northeast Peace Economy Association, and through this, I plan to engage in exchanges related to inter-Korean relations in the private sector, which is different from government activities."
When asked, "What did you want to accomplish during your term, and are there any regrets?" he replied, "I wanted to establish a foundation for inter-Korean exchanges. At first, things were going well, but now inter-Korean relations are at a stalemate. I consider that to be a regret."
Regarding the role of the next government, he said, "There are limits to national development without overcoming the division of North and South Korea," adding, "We must not give up and should steadily persuade and resolve the issues. It is very important to open up society by improving inter-Korean relations."
When asked whether he would play a political role again in future local or presidential elections, Lee responded, "I will faithfully fulfill my role as a party member."
