President Moon's Approval Rating Steady at 47%... Democratic Party 38%·United Party 20% [Gallup]
[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] President Moon Jae-in's approval rating for his administration remained steady at 47%, the same as the previous week. Notably, 'medical policy' appeared for the first time as a reason for negative evaluations, likely influenced by the ongoing medical sector strike.
According to a public opinion survey conducted by Gallup Korea from the 25th to the 27th among 1,002 adults aged 18 and over, 47% of respondents gave a positive evaluation of President Moon's job performance, announced on the 28th. This figure is unchanged from the previous week. Negative evaluations dropped by 2 percentage points to 43%.
When asked the reasons for positive evaluations from those who approved of the president's job performance (475 respondents), the responses were as follows: 'Response to COVID-19' (44%), 'Doing his best / working hard' (9%), 'Overall good performance' (6%), 'Efforts for ordinary people' and 'Expansion of welfare' (both 4%), 'Considering the people's position' and 'Real estate policy' (both 3%).
For negative evaluations (431 respondents), the reasons cited included 'Real estate policy' (22%), 'Lack of solutions for economic and livelihood issues' (11%), 'Autocratic / unilateral / biased' and 'Inadequate response to COVID-19' (both 10%), 'Overall insufficiency' (9%), 'Unfairness / double standards', 'Relations with North Korea', 'Personnel issues', and 'Lack of conviction and principles' (all 3%).
The newly appearing reason 'Medical policy' (2%) this week is believed to be influenced by the recent medical sector strike. Although the real estate issue has received less attention due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, it has remained the top reason for negative evaluations for eight consecutive weeks.
Party support ratings were surveyed as follows: the Democratic Party of Korea 38%, the United Future Party 20%, the Justice Party 7%, and both the People's Party and the Open Democratic Party at 2% each. Compared to the previous week, support for all parties except the Justice Party declined by 1 to 3 percentage points.
Meanwhile, regarding the second round of disaster relief payments, 44% of respondents favored selective payments based on income level, 33% supported payments to all citizens regardless of income, and 21% opposed payments. Two percent withheld their opinion.
