Gwangju Dong-gu Selected for 'Special Social Security Support Zone' Contest
Secured 870 Million Won in National and City Funds Over 3 Years
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Im Taek) announced on the 27th that it has been finally selected for the ‘Social Security Special Support Zone Operation’ support project organized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
The ‘Social Security Special Support Zone’ project is a policy-focused support initiative to improve the level of welfare services in areas vulnerable to social security, such as low-income dense areas. In Dong-gu, the Sansu and Gyerim-dong areas were selected.
When selected as a ‘Social Welfare Special Support Zone,’ national and city funds totaling 870 million KRW will be provided over the next three years for the construction of resident convenience living facilities, solidarity enhancement programs, group programs for vulnerable groups, and more.
Additionally, consulting for strengthening welfare capacity will be provided.
Taking this project as an opportunity, Dong-gu plans to create spaces where residents can interact in small-scale living areas lacking welfare infrastructure, promote local revitalization independently, strengthen solidarity through resident organization projects, and implement various programs for vulnerable groups including the establishment of a community care system.

Mayor Im Taek of Dong-gu said, “I am very pleased to be able to improve the deteriorated welfare environment in a situation where it is difficult to respond to residents’ welfare needs due to urban hollowing, aging, and an increase in single-person households,” adding, “We will build a public-private cooperative welfare community through resident participation to realize self-reliant welfare that responds independently to the community, moving away from beneficiary-centered support.”
