Typhoon Bavi Hits Southern Region, Moves Out of Central Area by Morning
Advance North from Pyongyang, Bypassing the Seoul Metropolitan Area
[Asia Economy reporters Jo In-kyung and Lee Hyun-joo] Typhoon No. 8 'Bavi' that caused significant damage in the southern regions crossed into North Korea on the 27th. By the morning, the central regions will also be out of its influence.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, as of 9 a.m. on the day, Bavi was moving northward at 46 km/h on land about 50 km northwest of Pyongyang.
Bavi made landfall near Ongjin Peninsula, Hwanghae Province, North Korea, around 5:30 a.m., and its wind speed and strong wind radius are rapidly decreasing. The typhoon will soon transform into an extratropical cyclone. As its strength weakens, all typhoon warnings issued for Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, parts of central and northern Gangwon Province, and northern Chungnam Province as of 9 a.m. have been lifted. However, strong wind warnings and advisories will continue until the afternoon in the metropolitan area, the five western islands, and some parts of Jeonnam Province. Very strong winds with maximum instantaneous wind speeds exceeding 37 m/s may still occur, so caution is necessary. Due to the approaching pressure trough from the southwest, heavy rain is expected in the southern regions until the day after tomorrow.
This typhoon's wind strength was not as strong as expected. Compared to typhoons 'Lingling (2019)' and 'Bolaven (2012)', which brought strong winds along a similar path as Bavi, it did not record record-breaking strong winds. The strongest wind was recorded on Heuksando Island, Sinan County, Jeonnam Province, with a maximum instantaneous wind speed of 47.4 m/s. This surpassed the 10th strongest record of typhoon 'Nabi (2009)', which recorded a maximum instantaneous wind speed of 47.3 m/s on Ulleungdo Island. However, it was behind Bolaven and Lingling. During Bolaven, Heuksando recorded 54.4 m/s (5th strongest ever), and during Lingling, Wando in Jeonnam recorded 51.8 m/s, ranking 7th all-time.
