'Intentional Ambulance Accident' Bereaved Family Files 50 Million Won Compensation Lawsuit Against Taxi Driver
[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] The bereaved family has filed a lawsuit seeking tens of millions of won in damages against a taxi driver who was criticized for blocking an ambulance, resulting in the death of an emergency patient.
On the 24th, Lee Jeongdo, a legal representative from the law firm Chamboon representing the bereaved family, submitted a complaint to the Suwon District Court Seongnam Branch demanding a total of 50 million won in damages from former taxi driver Choi Mo (31, detained and indicted).
In the complaint, Attorney Lee stated, "The defendant (Choi) has past experience driving an ambulance," and added, "At the time of the incident, he was at least implicitly aware that there might have been a critically ill patient in the ambulance, yet he deliberately collided with the ambulance using his taxi, constituting the crime of special assault."
He continued, "Due to the subsequent intentional obstruction of transport, the transfer to the emergency room was delayed, causing the patient to miss the golden treatment time and ultimately leading to death," and argued, "He is obligated to compensate for the damages caused by the mental suffering experienced by both the patient and the patient's family."
Earlier, on June 8th in the afternoon, Choi was arrested and later indicted in mid-June for intentionally causing a collision with a private ambulance on a road near Godeok Station on Subway Line 5 in Gangdong-gu, blocking its path for about 10 minutes while saying, 'Handle the accident first. If the patient dies, I will take responsibility.'
At that time, it was reported that the patient missed the opportunity to be admitted to the last remaining negative pressure isolation room by only about 10 minutes and had to wait in the ambulance for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
