President Moon 46.1%·Democratic Party 39.7%... Approval Ratings Rise Together [Realmeter]
[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] A poll has shown that the approval ratings of President Moon Jae-in and the Democratic Party of Korea have both risen. It appears that the spread of negative public opinion regarding Pastor Jeon Gwang-hoon's encouragement to participate in the Liberation Day rally at Sarang Jeil Church influenced this outcome.
According to Realmeter, which conducted the poll commissioned by YTN from the 18th to the 21st, the Democratic Party recorded 39.7% support in party preference, surpassing the United Future Party's 35.1%, the agency announced on the 24th. The Democratic Party rose by 4.9 percentage points compared to the previous week, while the United Future Party fell by 1.2 percentage points. Although the Democratic Party had been overtaken by the United Future Party for the first time since the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye in the previous survey, it made a significant rebound to reclaim the top spot.
In particular, the Democratic Party's support in its stronghold of Honam increased by 11.7 percentage points to 63.3%. Support also rose significantly in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam (up 11.3 percentage points to 39.8%) and in Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungcheong (up 7.0 percentage points to 39.7%). Conversely, the United Future Party saw notable declines in Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungcheong (down 7.8 percentage points to 29.4%) and in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam (down 4.7 percentage points to 40.3%).
Support for other parties was as follows: Justice Party 4.1%, Open Democratic Party 3.9%, and People's Party 2.6%.
President Moon Jae-in's approval rating for his administration also rebounded. His approval rating rose by 2.8 percentage points from the previous week to 46.1%, while disapproval fell by 1.8 percentage points to 50.8%.
Realmeter analyzed, "Expectations and hopes for the government's and ruling party's COVID-19 response influenced the simultaneous rise in approval ratings for the president and the Democratic Party, and consolidation in response to the United Future Party's pursuit also played a role."
