[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jung] Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), announced on the 24th (local time) that he will visit Tehran, Iran.
On the 22nd (local time), Director General Grossi revealed this fact through his Twitter, stating, "The purpose of the Tehran visit is to make concrete progress in addressing unresolved questions related to Iran's safeguards (safety measures) concerning its nuclear activities."
Safeguards refer to the activities by which the IAEA verifies through inspections that nuclear activities and the use of nuclear materials are for peaceful purposes.
He explained through an IAEA press release that this visit to Iran is related to issues regarding access to nuclear facilities.
Regarding the operation of Iran's nuclear facilities, the IAEA demanded at the Board of Governors meeting held in June that Iran cooperate with nuclear safeguards under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement (CSA), the Additional Protocol (AP), and other safety measures related to nuclear inspections under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
