Promotion of International Standards for 5G and Terahertz Wave Propagation Models
[Asia Economy Reporter Seolgina Jo] The National Radio Research Agency under the Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 23rd that it submitted a radio wave model developed in Korea as an international standard at the ‘International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) Study Group Meeting on Radio Propagation,’ held online for two weeks starting from the 10th, thereby laying the foundation to secure next-generation communication technology.
The international standard submitted by Korea analyzes the radio wave characteristics of domestic 5G frequency bands (3.5 GHz, 28 GHz) and develops radio wave models for various environments such as smart factories, while also preparing a terahertz radio wave model for future frequency bands. Until now, frequency bands above millimeter waves (30~300 GHz) have been limited to satellite communications or astronomical research due to significant path loss caused by obstacles, despite their advantage of providing large-capacity information.
Accordingly, the National Radio Research Agency specifically presented results analyzing radio wave loss caused by obstacles in 5G radio wave models for high-speed mobile environments such as automobiles (V2V) and KTX, as well as indoor environments like smart factories. This standard is meaningful in that it provides a radio wave model suitable for urban environments in Korea based on data measured in real environments such as Gwangju and Cheongju, thereby establishing a foundation for the active use of frequency bands above millimeter waves in mobile communications in the future.
Furthermore, it is evaluated that by developing a radio wave model for the 275~450 GHz band and submitting it as an international standard to discover and utilize radio resources in the terahertz band, which is being researched as the next-generation wireless communication frequency band, a foundation has been laid to secure future radio resources.
