Busan Beaches Including Haeundae, Gwangalli, and Songjeong to Close Urgently from Midnight on the 21st
[Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] Busan Metropolitan City has decided to urgently close seven beaches located in Busan from midnight on the 21st in accordance with its independent elevation of social distancing to Level 2, and to extend strengthened quarantine management measures such as gathering restrictions until September 30.
An official from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries explained, "Busan City has been implementing social distancing Level 2 since the 17th, and this urgent closure of beaches is part of these quarantine measures."
Previously, the 'Beach Quarantine Response Guidelines' distributed by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to local governments on July 8 stipulate that when quarantine authorities raise social distancing to Level 2, the operation of beaches must be suspended.
Accordingly, Incheon City suspended beach operations from the 19th following the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters (CDSCH) announcement of raising social distancing to Level 2 in the metropolitan area. However, in the case of Busan City, the elevation of distancing was based on the local government's independent judgment rather than the CDSCH.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries plans to require immediate closure of beaches in other local governments such as Chungnam when the CDSCH raises social distancing levels, and in cases where local governments independently raise distancing levels, the operation of beaches will be decided through consultation with the local governments.
