Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra's August 15 Concert at Seodaemun Prison History Hall Commemorating the 75th Anniversary of Liberation
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra will hold the '75th Liberation Day Commemorative Concert' at 8 p.m. on the 15th at the outdoor stage of Seodaemun Prison History Hall. This performance is the first public concert conducted by Osmo V?nsk?, who was appointed as the music director of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra in January, and it is also a concert commemorating Liberation Day.
To celebrate Liberation Day and provide citizens with opportunities to enjoy culture, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra has been holding Liberation Day commemorative concerts every year in collaboration with Woori Bank at venues such as the Sejong Center Grand Theater, Seoul Plaza, and Gwanghwamun Square. This year's concert adds significance to Liberation by being held at Seodaemun Prison History Hall, a symbol of resistance against Japanese colonial rule and a historic site of the independence movement, with the cooperation of Seodaemun-gu.
To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra will conduct the concert safely with a minimal invited audience, adhering to social distancing guidelines such as limiting the number of attendees, seating with at least 1 meter spacing, temperature checks, and electronic entry log registration. Additionally, the concert will be broadcast live through the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra’s Naver TV and YouTube channels, as well as the Seoul City YouTube channel (Live Seoul).
The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra will perform seven pieces over approximately 90 minutes, starting with the 'National Anthem.' Copland’s 'Fanfare for the Common Man' is a majestic piece combining the rhythms of percussion and brass instruments. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 'Fate' 1st movement expresses the joy of Liberation Day with a fast and lively atmosphere. Also, the traditional Korean folk song 'Arirang,' arranged by emerging composer Kim Taek-su, will be performed as a solo by Wayne Lin, the deputy concertmaster of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.
