[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the morning of the 12th, Kim Gun, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, held a video consultation with David Stilwell, U.S. Department of State Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, to discuss mutual interests including Korea-U.S. relations and regional and international affairs.
Both sides first evaluated the close communication at all levels between Korea and the U.S. to strengthen cooperation across various fields even amid the pandemic situation, including the response to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). In particular, in preparation for the possibility of increased exchanges between the peoples of the two countries following the recent resumption of U.S. student visa issuance and the lifting of the Level 4 (travel ban) global travel advisory, they agreed to cooperate to ensure that people-to-people exchanges between the two countries continue smoothly under thorough and safe quarantine measures.
Additionally, both sides agreed to expand mutually beneficial cooperation in the new domain of space, following the adoption of the '2020 Revised Missile Guidelines' which completely lifted restrictions on the use of solid fuel for space launch vehicles based on continuous coordination between Korea and the U.S.
Furthermore, Assistant Secretary Stilwell stated that he would maintain close communication with Korea regarding the upcoming Group of Seven (G7) summit, and the Korean side expressed its position to fulfill the roles and contributions expected of Korea by the international community. They also exchanged views on regional and international affairs and agreed to continue discussions on ways to enhance Korea-U.S. cooperation in the region, including cooperation between Korea’s New Southern Policy and the U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy.
