Jongno-gu, Making Every Effort to Minimize Resident Damage from Heavy Rain
Checking on vulnerable residents such as those at risk of flood damage, people with disabilities, and elderly living alone via phone... Providing home repairs and disinfection visits if support is deemed necessary, and replacing circuit breakers for households with electrical wiring concerns
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jongno-gu (Mayor Kim Young-jong) has rolled up its sleeves to minimize resident damage amid continuous heavy rains causing flooding across the country.
The district is prioritizing resident safety by conducting emergency inspections of vulnerable households, followed by full efforts in recovery support and disinfection.
From the 3rd to the 6th, the district contacted 1,800 households, including vulnerable residential groups, people with disabilities, and elderly living alone, by phone to check on their well-being, and visited those deemed in need of support in person.
For residents whose ceilings or interiors were seeped with water, raising concerns about mold growth or ceiling collapse, the district provided home repairs, cleaning, disinfection, and relief supplies (dehumidifiers). For households at risk of electrical short circuits or gas leaks, circuit breakers were replaced.
Additionally, the district focused on underground housing areas vulnerable to rain damage and took emergency measures through the road department and mobile teams where road damage caused water inflow into homes.
Residents affected by flooding were connected to necessary services and guided to temporary shelters, actively responding to the damage situation.
The district is also meticulously conducting disinfection activities to prevent COVID-19 and protect residents' health. On the 7th, over 150 members of the Saemaul Leaders Association and community center staff were deployed to conduct disinfection across the entire Jongno area from 7 a.m. to prevent pests and diseases caused by the rainy season.
Jongno-gu operates a Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters to minimize resident damage from the rainy season and prepare for rainfall, maintaining emergency duty and communication systems.
The Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters is composed of the ‘Situation Management Team,’ ‘Traffic Countermeasures Team,’ ‘Disaster Public Relations Team,’ ‘Environmental Maintenance Team,’ and ‘Life Support Team,’ sharing information with related agencies and responding swiftly to disaster situations. Each team is responsible for disaster forecasts and warnings, facility damage repair, flood debris disposal, support for disaster victims, and management of disaster supplies.
