Hong Moon-pyo: "Lee Hae-chan's Dictatorial Idea to Force the Corruption Investigation Office Even by Amending the Law"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Hong Moon-pyo, a member of the Future United Party, criticized Lee Hae-chan, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, who is pushing the High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Unit (HCIC) bill, saying, "The idea of changing the law to get it done is a dictatorial notion."
On the 6th, Hong appeared on TBS's 'Kim Eo-jun's News Factory' and said, "Leader Lee said, 'If it is not done by August, special measures will be taken,' which implicitly suggests that they will do it even if the law has to be changed."
He said, "The reform of the prosecution is about separating either the investigative authority or the prosecutorial authority, but isn't the HCIC taking all of these?" He questioned, "If the HCIC takes both prosecutorial and investigative powers under the pretext of prosecutorial reform, then who will carry out this reform and who will oversee it?"
He added, "If anyone is to do it, it would only be the president," and continued, "If the HCIC is established, will cases close to the president or the ruling party be properly investigated?"
Hong said, "Even if it takes a little longer, we should not rush while waiting for the Constitutional Court's response to our inquiry, and instead, the ruling and opposition parties should pool their wisdom to find a way to work together as a second-best option," adding, "We are hoping for this." Earlier, the United Party filed a constitutional complaint with the Constitutional Court questioning the constitutionality of the HCIC law.
