Expanding Channels Through 'Vegetarian Zone,' a Vegan Food-Only Section Operated at 21 Emart Stores
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Seon-ae] Dongwon F&B's plant-based meat substitute brand ‘Beyond Meat’ announced on the 6th that it has been introduced to the vegetarian zones operated at 21 Emart stores nationwide.
‘Beyond Meat’ is a 100% plant-based meat substitute brand that Dongwon F&B has been exclusively importing from the United States and selling domestically since last year. Beyond Meat is made from proteins extracted from soybeans, mushrooms, and pumpkins, resulting in a high protein content while having low fat and saturated fat content. It contains no environmental hormones or antibiotics, making it popular among consumers who avoid meat consumption for health and other reasons.
The hamburger patty-shaped ‘Beyond Burger’ is Beyond Meat’s flagship product, launched in 2016. It surpassed 50 million units sold worldwide within three years, and about 100,000 units have been sold domestically through online malls, department stores, and discount marts. Riding on this positive response, Dongwon F&B strengthened its domestic alternative meat market strategy by additionally launching ‘Beyond Beef’ and ‘Beyond Sausage’ in April.
The vegetarian zones, which started operation on the 6th at 21 Emart stores nationwide, are dedicated shelves where consumers can find various vegan products such as Beyond Meat, frozen dumplings, frozen rice, nuggets, and ice cream made solely from plant-based ingredients. Dongwon F&B plans to expand the presence of its products in the vegetarian zones, starting with Beyond Burger this month and adding Beyond Beef and Beyond Sausage next month, so that more consumers can access these products.
