View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] While heavy rain of up to 120mm per hour is forecasted to pour in the central region, the southern region is expected to experience a heatwave with temperatures exceeding 33 degrees Celsius.
On the 5th, the Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted that from this day until the 7th, areas including Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Gangwon Yeongseo, Chungcheong Province, and the five islands in the West Sea will receive rainfall ranging from 100 to 200mm. Some areas are expected to see cumulative precipitation exceeding 400mm.
The cause of the rain is the rain cloud band developing along a stationary front that stretches narrowly north to south and long east to west across the central region. When a large amount of moisture accompanying Typhoon No. 4 'Hagupit' is also drawn into the stationary front, a significant amount of rain is expected. Although Typhoon Hagupit weakened to a tropical depression after making landfall near Shanghai, China, a large amount of moisture is expected to move toward South Korea. Due to this influence, some areas in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, and Gangwon Yeongseo may experience very heavy rain accompanied by gusts, thunder, and lightning, with rainfall rates of 50 to 100mm per hour (and over 120mm per hour in some areas).
In the southern region, there will be places with showers due to atmospheric instability, and rain is expected to begin in earnest from tomorrow. The expected rainfall in Gangwon Yeongdong and the southern region is 50 to 100mm (with some areas receiving over 150mm) until the 7th.
Meanwhile, before the rain arrives, many places in southern Chungcheong Province, the southern region, and Jeju are expected to have daytime temperatures rising above 33 degrees Celsius, making it very hot. The forecasted daytime high temperatures are 34 degrees in Daegu, 33 degrees in Gyeongju, and 32 degrees in Gwangju. With high humidity, the actual perceived temperature will be about 2 to 3 degrees higher.

According to the mid-term forecast released by the Korea Meteorological Administration, the monsoon rain in the central region is expected to continue until the 14th. If the forecast holds, it may break the record for the longest monsoon period in history. The monsoon in the central region, which began on June 24, has entered its 43rd day. The longest monsoon period in the central region was 49 days in 2013. The monsoon period in Jeju, which ended on the 28th of last month, lasted a total of 49 days, the longest since records began in 1973.
