"'Putting Master' Spieth: Practice Like This~"
20 Straights and 4-9 Feet, 10 Feet Routine "Adding Games to Spark Interest"
Jordan Spieth became a 'putting master' with his own unique green practice method.
View original image[Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae] Jordan Spieth (USA) is a 'master of putting.'
He has won a total of 11 PGA Tour titles, including three majors. Leading with his almost supernatural putting, he achieved remarkable victories at the 2015 Masters and US Open, and the 2017 The Open Championship. He reached three major wins by age 24 faster than the 'resurrected golf emperor' Tiger Woods (USA, 24 years and 6 months). Although he has not collected a winner's trophy for three years since his Open Championship victory, everyone agrees that he is a player who built his reputation on putting.
Since debuting on the PGA Tour in 2013, his strokes gained putting (SG: putting) has been outstanding. He proudly ranked first in 2015, 2016, and 2019. He has only once fallen outside the top 60. This is the secret to his consistent performance. Spieth recently appeared on a podcast and revealed his unique putting routine. First, he makes about 20 straight putts. He uses a putting rail to check if the starting point is correct.
Next, he trains around the hole from 4 to 9 feet (1.22 to 2.74 meters). He attempts putts from all directions?east, west, south, north?as well as uphill, downhill, slices, and hooks. Once he gets a feel for putting, he plays a game from 10 feet (3.05 meters). He attempts 10 putts and must score 4 under par or better to succeed. If the putt is short or passes the hole by more than 2 feet (61 cm), it counts as a bogey. Within 2 feet counts as par, and if holed, it counts as a birdie.

Spieth adds fun to his putting practice. He places a coin, considered as the hole, 1.5 meters ahead and putts. If the ball rolls over the coin and stops within 15 cm, he scores 100 points. This method helps him find both distance control and ball speed simultaneously. To improve accuracy, he uses ball markers. He places two ball markers between the ball and the hole at a distance of 3 meters. The gap allows only one ball to pass through. If the ball passes through the ball markers and goes into the hole, it is a perfect putt.
