Gwangju City Selects 5 Sites for Public Building Green Remodeling Contest Project
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 4th that a total of five projects, including two national and public daycare centers and three public health centers, were selected in the ‘Public Building Green Remodeling’ contest hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
Gwangju expects this project to serve as a catalyst for the ‘Gwangju-type Green New Deal Comprehensive Plan,’ which is being promoted with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045.
The ‘Gwangju-type Green New Deal Comprehensive Plan’ is a plan to reduce Gwangju’s greenhouse gas emissions by 45% compared to 2010 levels by 2030 and to achieve a carbon-neutral (Net-Zero) city by 2045.
This plan will be promoted through three main strategies: ▲ a green transition city where all citizens produce and consume green energy based on IDEA (Infrastructure, Data, Environment facilities, Artificial Intelligence AI) ▲ a climate-safe city that achieves net-zero greenhouse gas emissions through green transition and is the safest and most comfortable from climate disasters by responding to the climate crisis ▲ a green industrial city that protects citizens’ lives and jobs by fostering green industries and revives marginalized jobs.
The ‘Public Building Green Remodeling Project’ promoted this year is a remodeling project for aging buildings under the government’s Green New Deal, targeting national and public daycare centers, public health centers, and public medical facilities that have been completed for more than 15 years. It aims to improve energy, living environment, new technology systems, and aesthetics of aging buildings to the level of newly constructed buildings.
Gwangju’s green remodeling pilot project includes a total of five facilities: two daycare centers, Hwajeong 2-dong Daycare Center and Hyosarang Hana Daycare Center, and three public health centers, Seochang Health Clinic, Guso Health Center, and Hwajang Health Center.
The total project cost is 1.825 billion KRW, of which 70%, or 1.278 billion KRW, is national funding.
The main project contents include improving energy performance through high-performance insulation, windows, and equipment upgrades, improving indoor air quality by replacing ventilation systems, and establishing IT infrastructure such as Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS).
It is expected that about 120,000 tons of greenhouse gases will be reduced nationwide through this project, and it is anticipated to greatly contribute to improving convenience for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly by enhancing the living environment of public buildings.
