Choi Mookyung, Jeonnam Provincial Assembly Member, "Will Remove Natural Disaster Risk Factors"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Choi Mugyeong, Chair of the Safety, Construction, and Firefighting Committee of the Jeonnam Provincial Council, announced on the 4th that he visited the drainage improvement project site in Boksan District, Sora-myeon, Yeosu, on the 3rd to inspect the preparedness for natural disasters during the summer season.
On that day, Chair Choi's on-site inspection of disaster prevention facilities was conducted to directly check the preemptive measures for disaster-vulnerable facilities in preparation for the heavy rains during the summer season.
Chair Choi visited habitual flooding areas such as the drainage channels in Jindallae Village, Boksan-ri, Sora-myeon, Yeosu City, and the Daegok seawall, toured the site, and received reports from officials on the progress of the Boksan District drainage improvement project and the management status of retention ponds.
The Boksan-ri area, including the vicinity of Jindallae Village, a nursing facility for the elderly, is a lowland area below sea level where rainwater accumulates during heavy rains, causing frequent flooding.
In particular, when the timing coincides with high tide in the nearby sea, water does not drain, resulting in continuous damage such as flooding of farmland and low-lying agricultural land.
Chair Choi urged, “Please thoroughly promote the project to ensure that there is no inconvenience to local residents' lives, such as flooding damage caused by river overflow due to heavy rain and backflow caused by seawater meeting at high tide, through maintenance of structures such as drainage pump facilities.”
The Boksan District in Sora-myeon, Yeosu, was finally selected as a target site for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' drainage improvement project in June this year, with a budget of 3.6 billion KRW to complete the project by 2023 over 51.3 hectares (including one drainage station, one drainage gate, and 0.4 km of drainage channels).

Meanwhile, Chair Choi plans to minimize damage from natural disasters by removing risk factors in advance through inspections of disaster-vulnerable facilities such as stormwater retention ponds, habitual flooding areas in lowlands, and steep slope collapse risk areas in preparation for heavy summer rains and autumn typhoons.
