Russian Health Authorities: "Any Disinfectant Can Kill the COVID-19 Virus"
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] The Russian health authorities have announced that the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) can be killed by any type of disinfectant, so it is safe to use disinfectants regardless of their type. It is also known that the COVID-19 virus cannot survive in boiling water or chlorinated water.
According to Russia's TASS news agency on the 2nd (local time), Anna Popova, head of the Russian Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing, stated in an interview with a Russian TV channel, "Any type of disinfectant can kill the COVID-19 virus," adding, "Disinfectants at appropriate concentrations are lethal to all viruses, and it does not matter what substance is used to disinfect surfaces contaminated with the virus." The COVID-19 virus is known to survive up to 48 hours on surfaces made of plastic or metal.
The agency, which is Russia's quarantine authority, previously announced the results of an analysis on the virus's survival in water, confirming that it is completely eliminated in boiling water or chlorinated water. Director Popova stated, "The COVID-19 virus does not multiply in fresh water or seawater, and it is immediately destroyed in boiling water and chlorinated water." The Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing Service added that samples taken last month from centralized water supply sources, swimming pools, nursing homes, and seawater in some regions of Russia showed no detection of the COVID-19 virus.
