'Seoul Metropolitan Art Archive' Specialized in Contemporary Art Records to Open in Pyeongchang-dong

Pre-Program Exhibition 'Ireona Ollaga Imdongsik' Held
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 3rd that it will open the 'Seoul Metropolitan Art Archive,' which exhibits important materials and records of contemporary art, in Pyeongchang-dong, Jongno-gu, by December next year.
This is a new branch of the Seoul Museum of Art and functions as a municipal art museum with archive and research capabilities. Here, visitors can primarily view art archives created by creators, critics, and curators that have not been previously disclosed, including artist notes, unfinished drawings, handwritten manuscripts, diaries, letters, memos, photographs, and films.
Pyeongchang-dong, Jongno-gu, where the museum will be located, is an area densely populated with small galleries and art museums and home to many artists. A total of three buildings will be constructed on a 7,300㎡ site.
Since 2017, the city has been collecting 19 collections comprising a total of over 48,000 art archives. These are being sequentially databased and will be pre-released on the website before the opening.

Meanwhile, as a pre-opening program, the exhibition "Get Up and Go Up, Im Dongsik" will be held at the Seoul Museum of Art Seosomun Main Building from the 19th to November 22nd. This solo exhibition highlights the artistic world of artist Im Dongsik and is planned based on a total of over 5,000 archives, including about 1,300 items donated by the artist.
