Dongwon Industries Launches MSC-Certified Tuna 'Dongwon Tuna Ice Cube'
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Saeng-hye] Dongwon Industries announced on the 3rd that it has launched the tuna product "Dongwon Tuna Ice Cube," which is the first in the domestic seafood industry to receive MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) sustainable fishery certification.
Dongwon Tuna Ice Cube is a frozen product made by processing MSC-certified yellowfin tuna into bite-sized cubic pieces. It can be used in various recipes such as steak, salad, and braised dishes according to preference. Especially, it comes with a chili paste sauce and sesame oil, making it a great delicacy for midsummer. Additionally, Dongwon Tuna Ice Cube is made from fresh tuna caught directly by Dongwon Industries and frozen immediately at minus 40°C. Since the company manages the processing and distribution of the product directly, consumers can trust its quality.
The price of Dongwon Tuna Ice Cube is 9,900 KRW for a pack of two 80g packs. It can be found at nearby large discount marts.
MSC is the most prestigious global non-profit organization in the sustainable seafood sector, conducting a rigorous certification process by evaluating over 30 factors throughout the fishing process, including marine ecosystem and species protection, and compliance with international regulations.
Recently, Dongwon Industries has solidified its position as a leading company in sustainable fisheries by consecutively obtaining MSC certification for purse seine fisheries that catch tuna for canning and pole-and-line fisheries that catch tuna for sashimi. It is the first in the world to receive MSC certification for both fishing methods as an operator running both purse seine and pole-and-line vessels. Also, since April, it has started the first overseas export of MSC-certified tuna in Korea.
Currently, MSC-certified seafood accounts for only 15% of all seafood distributed in the global market, but as the "ethical consumption" trend spreads worldwide, MSC-certified seafood is expected to become the global standard. In fact, global companies such as Walmart, Costco, IKEA, and McDonald's are leading the policy-driven expansion of MSC-certified seafood sales, resulting in a significant increase in demand.
