Enjoy Coffee and Desserts While Exploring Lighting, Furniture, and Accessories
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-sun] World-renowned industrial designer Tom Dixon has personally designed a cafe, which is being introduced for the first time in Korea at Hyundai Department Store Apgujeong Main Branch.
Hyundai Department Store announced on the 2nd that it has opened 'Tom Dixon, Cafe The Martini' on the 4th floor of the Apgujeong Main Branch in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, marking the first of its kind in Korea. The cafe spans a total area of 90㎡ (approximately 27 pyeong), and all fixtures inside the store, including chairs, tables, lighting, and tableware, are products personally designed by Tom Dixon. The cafe offers food and beverages (F&B) such as tea, coffee, and desserts, as well as lighting, furniture, and interior accessories for sale.
Tom Dixon is a leading British industrial designer who gained global fame by participating as a special designer at Maison&Objet in France, one of the world's top three design fairs. His representative works include the 'S Chair,' made by wrapping rattan around a steel frame, and the round lighting fixture 'Mirrorball,' designed with bronze copper.
Currently, Tom Dixon, Cafe The Martini has about 10 stores in 5 countries including London, UK; Milan, Italy; and Hong Kong. In Asia, the Apgujeong Main Branch of Hyundai Department Store is the second store following Hong Kong.
It is explained that Tom Dixon chose to open his first store in Korea at Hyundai Department Store Apgujeong Main Branch due to the branch's status as a luxury department store. The high brand competitiveness and the fact that it has the highest sales per unit area among domestic department stores also positively influenced the decision. Additionally, the customer base, which has extensive overseas travel and living experience and a high understanding of new trends, played a role.
A Hyundai Department Store official said, “We plan to continuously introduce attractions that can only be experienced at the Apgujeong Main Branch for trend-sensitive customers,” adding, “We will develop various lifestyle contents that inspire customers and firmly establish our status as a trendy luxury department store.”
