Korea University Selected as Core Technology Institution in Hongneung Small Giant R&D Special Zone
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Korea University announced on the 30th that it has been selected as a core technology institution of the 'Seoul Hongneung Small Giant Research and Development Special Zone (hereinafter Hongneung Special Zone),' designated by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
The Small Giant Research and Development Special Zone is a regional innovation growth platform that the government focuses on supporting to promote the commercialization of science and technology and activate research and development. It offers R&D budget support, regulatory exemptions, and tax reduction benefits. Seoul City selected Korea University, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), and Kyung Hee University as core technology institutions to revitalize the Hongneung Special Zone. Each institution plans to collaborate with companies located in the zone to also promote entry into overseas markets.
The Hongneung Special Zone has designated digital healthcare as its specialized field, including biomarker, smart diagnostic medical devices, big data platforms, and artificial intelligence (AI)-based medical software. The university expects that Korea University Medical Center, which holds research-oriented hospitals such as Korea University Anam Hospital and Guro Hospital, as well as certification as an international medical device clinical trial institution, will play a pivotal role.
President Chung Jin-taek said, "We will unite our capabilities so that Hongneung can establish itself as a world-class biomedical cluster and become a new pride of the Korean economy." Kim Young-hoon, Vice President for Medical Affairs, said, "All members will strive to develop promising clinical-based technologies through industry-academia-research collaboration and realize their commercialization."
